Power and Persuasion – A History of the University of Western Australia Academic Staff Association and its Predecessors 1913 – 2013
Established in 1913 prior to the commencement of teaching, the Staff Association has played an active role in the development of the University which now enjoys an enviable reputation and ranks as a World Top 100 university.
To celebrate its centenary of teaching and service to its academics, UWAASA commissioned West Australian Historian, Dr Ian Duckham MPHA, to research and write the history of the Academic Staff Association.
The research journey to gain material for the book fascinated Dr Duckham as it provided a comprehensive insight into the fabric of the educational establishment in the early days of Western Australia, an insight that he is excited to share with other West Australian historians and educators.
Dr Duckham was amazed how, over 100 years, so many members of the Association have influenced and moulded the University to its prominent position in our contemporary society.
In keeping with its objectives to protect and further the interests of all members and maintain the University’s continued success, the Academic Staff Association continues to promote and protect the freedom and independence of its teachers and, to promote education, research and interchange with members of kindred institutions in Australia and abroad.
This book was made possible through the contribution of the many UWA staff and UWAASA members that readily shared documents, photographs and memories.
