In the University of W.A.’s Centennial Year, the UWA Academic Staff Association (UWAASA) has held its own memorable Centenary celebrations – holding topical forums, inaugurating a new award and launching a specially commissioned book on the history of the Staff Association, which was established in 1913 prior to the commencement of teaching.
The UWAASA Centenary Award celebrates 100 years of academic service that its academics and Alumni have given to the University, the community and the world at large. The Award was officially launched by the Vice-Chancellor and UWAASA’s President, Winthrop Professor Raymond Da Silva Rosa and the UWAASA Committee in April.
The Centenary Awards were presented by the Vice-Chancellor on 8 November 2013 and in two categories there were dual recipients due to outstanding nominations.
Presentations were made as follows:
- To Dr Charles Fox (For an Academic still working at UWA
- To Dr Jack Cannon and to Professor Christine McMenamin (For an Academic retired from UWA)
- To Dr Brenton Knott and Dr Terry Quickenden (Posthumous Award)
At the same function on 8 November, Professorial Fellow Stuart Bunt, Acting President of UWAASA presented the first copy of the history of the UWA Staff Association, titled Power and Persuasion – A History of the University of Western Australia Academic Staff Association and its Predecessors 1913 – 2013, to the Vice-Chancellor.
Professor Bunt congratulated author WA historian, Dr Ian Dr Duckham MPHA , and thanked all those who had contributed to the book, by photographs, interviews, written statements and access to precious documents.
