Restructure of the Academic Calendar – a member’s account of Academic Board 21 June 2017

The restructure of the academic calendar was debated at the June 21 meeting of the Academic Board, and the motion was passed. However, while the motion was passed, there was a general feeling among members of the board that it was passed without sufficient discussion, without a robust consensus, and without the support of the student representative body, (for whose satisfaction the changes were, ostensibly, being made). A detailed account of the content of the discussion, and the subsequent decision process is available here.

The above account was written by an Academic Board and UWAASA member as their best recollection of what occurred. If readers believe there are factual errors, please let UWA ASA know and we will correct them.

We seek our members’ suggestions and directions for how UWAASA and academics more broadly can be encouraged to engage in a meaningful and effective way on these matters of fundamental interest to all.

  1. THANK YOU FOR THIS HELPFUL AND INFORMATIVE REPORT. i AGREE THAT A PROPOSAL INTENDED TO IMPROVE THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE AND WITHOUT STUDENT OR STAFF SUPPORT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN APPROVED. YET AGAIN, WE ARE NOT BEING LISTENED TO.
tHE BIGGEST CHALLENGE IS TO HOW TO TIMETABLE THE 150 HOURS IN 12 WEEKS WHEN WE HAVE ACCREDITED PROGRAMS THAT SPECIFY THE NUMBER OF HOURS OF CONTENT TO BE OFFERED (A POINT REBUTTED, INCORRECTLY, IN THE REVISED PROPOSAL).
